Start with what is actually scheduled

Check the BEA, BLS and Federal Reserve calendars before choosing which release to follow. Dates can change. This page collects recent available reports; it is not a complete live calendar. Record the observation period as well as the release date so that last month’s employment and last quarter’s output do not become a misleading snapshot of today.

Read the measure before the number

GDP describes production, the unemployment rate describes a particular share of the labor force, and price indexes track selected baskets. A quarterly annualized growth rate is not a year-over-year growth rate. CPI and the PCE price index differ in scope and construction; compare like with like and read each release’s definitions.

Keep revisions beside the headline

Write down the newly published value, the comparable previous period and any revision to it. A stronger new estimate can coexist with a downward revision elsewhere. If you discuss a surprise, identify a dated consensus source; without one, simply describe the change. An economic release alone does not explain every same-day market move.
